The 2023/24 JABU League kicked off on Saturday, and it was more thrilling than binge-watching your favorite series. With the presence of distinguished guests, including the Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs Officer, and Registrar, the stage was set for a memorable sporting journey.
The first match, a thrilling clash between Powerful FC and Soccer Aid FC, set the tone for what promises to be an action-packed tournament. Powerful FC emerged victorious with a convincing 3-1 win, sending ripples of excitement and anticipation throughout the JABU community. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the remarkable inauguration of the JABU League and the memorable moments that marked its inception.
The pivotal moment of the match unfolded not with a player’s skill but with the precise kick of our accomplished Vice Chancellor, celebrating one year in office. His ceremonial kick marked the beginning of the clash between Powerful FC and Soccer Aid FC.

Powerful FC came into the match as strong favourites with a team featuring some of the best players from last Semester’s SUE CUP. With star players like LEXRO and AIYE from Nursing (back to back SUE CUP winners), AYOMI from Computer Science, and AGBARA from Architecture, it was no surprise a lot of JABU students were rooting for Powerful FC,
but that in no way implied that Soccer Aid was going to be a walk in the park as their team also boasts Computer Science brightest star, IBUKUN. It wasn’t his best day on the pitch this time out as he became the first player to miss an empty net and then receive a red card this season.
The opening goal came from Powerful FC, with a well-placed strike by LEXRO in the 16th minute. Soccer Aid responded, equalizing in the 23rd minute as Jerry found the back of the net from inside the six-yard box after coming close on three occasions.
At halftime, it was anyone’s game. But when the second half began, it was like a wild rollercoaster ride. GODWIN, in the 55th minute, put Powerful FC back in the lead, and LEXRO, the star of the day, added another goal in the 63rd minute. As if that wasn’t enough, Soccer Aid’s star and captain, IBUKUN, had to hit the showers early with a red card.
We caught up with the Man of the Match LEXRO after the game and here’s what he had to say
